Chargeback reason code lookup
Common Visa and Mastercard chargeback reason codes, plainly explained: what the cardholder alleged, and the evidence that answers it. Built for merchants — the same evidence discipline behind Owedly's Chargeback Hub.
Other Fraud — Card-Absent Environment
The cardholder claims they did not authorize a card-not-present transaction — classic friendly-fraud territory.
No Authorization
The transaction was processed without a valid authorization.
Incorrect Amount
The cardholder was charged a different amount than agreed.
Duplicate Processing
The cardholder was billed twice for the same transaction.
Paid by Other Means
The cardholder says they already paid another way.
Merchandise / Services Not Received
The cardholder claims the goods or services never arrived.
Cancelled Recurring Transaction
The cardholder says they cancelled a subscription but were still billed.
Not as Described or Defective
The goods or services didn't match the description or arrived defective.
Credit Not Processed
The cardholder was promised a refund that never appeared.
Cancelled Merchandise / Services
The cardholder cancelled the order but was still charged.
Authorization Not Obtained
The transaction went through without required authorization (includes expired or missing auth).
Point of Interaction Error
Billed twice, or the settled amount doesn't match the receipt — terminal/POS errors.
No Cardholder Authorization
Someone other than the cardholder made the purchase — the Mastercard equivalent of Visa 10.4.
Cancelled Recurring Transaction
Recurring billing continued after the cardholder cancelled.
Cardholder Dispute
The big one — covers not-as-described/defective, goods not provided, cancelled recurring, and credit not processed, depending on sub-condition.
Non-Receipt of Merchandise
Goods or services were never provided. (Now a named sub-condition inside 4853.)
Cardholder Does Not Recognize — Possible Fraud
The cardholder doesn't recognize the transaction; filed as potential fraud.
